And he really helped develop this whole Superboy-Prime story and he was amazing on it and it said what Death Metal was about. And we had our ups and downs as creators at times but, ultimately, I think we've gotten close, and I really respect his sensibilities with the characters. We circled each other a bunch over the years, and there was a point where we were going to do a Batman/ Justice League crossover back in the New 52 we just couldn't, timing-wise, make it work.

For example, with The Secret Origin book, I had never gotten a chance before to work with Geoff Johns. I thought what we wanted to do was have stuff that really spoke to what the event was about. I was nervous about having more, and I was a little bit unhappy about having less. Where we landed with it at the end was, for me, the perfect amount. RELATED: Death Metal Reveals Which Superman Hero Secretly Saved the Multiverse Infinite Frontier is like an extension and expansion of the ideals of Death Metal in a way that I think is going to be blazingly fun and real interesting line of comics. Right now, it's pretty integral to the thinking of the way DC is proceeding but bigger. Now luckily, after all the hardship and heartbreak about losing a lot of people at DC, the state of things with Marie Javins in charge - who is my absolute dear, dear friend and who edited a lot of the first Metal and all of Justice League with the great Rebecca Taylor and Mark Doyle and came over and edited Metal - we've been able to make what's on the other side with Infinite Frontier line up with the priorities and compass that Death Metal has always been following as opposed to it being somewhat kind of in a bubble or partially what's after. So on a story level, it was about that, and then on a structural level, in terms of what we hope to do with the anthologies, to signal that all this stuff was about that. Making the whole past real and, in doing so, there would be ups and downs and things people were horrified by and things people were excited by, all of it, but that we would expand on it by making the DC Multiverse bigger on the other side and bring in new talent. That was always the way we saw the event.

But it's my belief that it's the big compass we developed when we developed Metal: If Metal is a smaller, more personal story about what it's like to look around and feel like only the worst versions of yourself are the true ones - which is what I think you feel like when you're depressed, having been there and had tremendous anxiety and comics have helped me through those periods - then something that was more outward-looking would be about how we think comics needs to embrace going forward in these rough times.Īnd the tenet is instead of making this moment all-important at the expense of the past, instead of saying 'Nothing matters but now!' - which is some stuff that's getting us into trouble in the real world right and left about prioritizing ourselves or this moment, or that kind of selfishness that Lex Luthor over in Justice League was always promoting - and instead said 'Look at the past! Reckon with it in terms of all the good, the bad, the ugly!' And by reckoning with it, you can go build something better, brighter and more expansive going forward. And it shifted back and forth a few times in the kind of changing waters of what DC has been over the last couple years.
